Teachers need to step up

THE EDITOR: I was elated to see the  Education Minister taking steps in reforming the education system. Teachers are now getting sizeable salaries which come from hard earned tax- payers dollars. In my business, when you pay for quality you expect quality. When are we going to see teachers stepping up to the plate? They have gone to Training College and UWI, yet they teach the same as they did decades ago.

Two years ago my wife and I, disappointed with the state of education in public schools, decided to hire a private tutor to coach our son for SEA. It was the best decision we ever made. She was the epitomy of what we had hoped our son would be getting in school. She used modern methods, different approaches and was persistent and dependable. The cost for this tuition was expensive but was worth the peace of mind and the joy on our son’s face when he recently passed SEA for his first choice. He also has the foundation for a bright future. Public schools need to start delivering the goods to our nation’s children. It starts with our teachers to make the difference.
