Adults to blame for nasty TT

THE ADULT POPULATION has been identified as the main cause of environmental pollution and health problems in TT. Speaking yesterday at the sixth annual fair of the Laventille Drug Abuse and Demand Reduction Committee on the theme "Your Health — Your Wealth," Corporate Commun-ications Assistant of the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), Kirk Jean-Baptiste, said adults were the main cause of all the flooding in the city of Port-of-Spain.

Several health booths visited the Laventille Youth Facility to provide information on health-related issues to the community through the use of pamphlets and lectures.

According to Jean-Baptiste, at the bottom of Frederick Street there is a catchment area where garbage is collected on a weekly basis by a one tonne truck.

"There is a thin line between environment and health. The main cause of flooding is the dumping of garbage in the streets. People see an empty lot and dump their garbage and this encourages flies, rats and cockroaches," said Jean-Baptiste.

Everything is related to the environment, said Jean-Baptiste, people must stop pointing fingers because if we continue to allow the breeding of vermin through senseless dumping, there will always be health problems in the society.

Public Health Inspectorate with the Ministry of Health, Teresa Tsoi-A-Fatt was also present at the fair to educate people on the environment relating to drainage complaints and overgrowth of bush. Tsoi-A-Fatt said many people are unaware that a Public Health Inspectorate is attached to their community, and this is where these types of complaints should be made to keep the environment clean.

Residents of the area were also treated to free blood pressure testing and diet scans by District Health Visitor Marlene James and assistant nurse Marva Taitt of the Success Village Laventille Health Centre.
