Princes Town barber shot and robbed

A WELL KNOWN Princes Town barber was yesterday shot and robbed of $12,000 in cash by two bandits. Thien Singh, commonly known as "Gretel," 54, of Lengua Village, operates a barber shop on High Street in the basement of a commercial building which he owns.

At 8.30 am yesterday, two bandits confronted Singh as he was walking towards his shop. According to a police report, Singh had just collected some $12,000 in rent from tenants.

The report stated that two men confronted him. One of the men pointed a gun at Singh and announced a hold-up. Singh was struck with the gunbutt on the back of his head, and the men then snatched an envelope with the cash from Singh. According to the report, the gunman subsequently shot Singh twice — on his right arm and leg, before escaping on foot.

Singh, who has been operating a barber shop for the past 20 years in Princes Town, was reportedly warded in satisfactory condition at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Sgt Errol Ramdath of the Princes Town Police Station is investigating.
