Mystery surrounds two ‘alleged’ bombing suspects

Despite claims that two suspects were held yesterday in connection with the George Street blast on Wednesday, police sources revealed yesterday that there were no arrests concerning the explosion.

Secrecy and widespread speculation surround the arrest of two "alleged" suspects. Up to press time last night, there had been no confirmation by senior CID officers, or any branch of the Police Service.

Yesterday, members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and bomb technicians visited the George Street site, where rubble and debris were left from the detonation of the device. The device had been placed at the bottom of a light pole which exploded, tearing apart the concrete and throwing garbage into the air.

The blast occurred at about 11.30 am on Wednesday, as heavy rain hampered the progress of pedestrians across the sidewalk. Many George Street store owners and vendors said the rain may have prevented injury or death to citizens.

However, in a press release yesterday, the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) stated that the country was now facing acts of terrorism, and little action was being taken with no results from the authorities.

"Exactly one month ago, after the first explosion in Port-of-Spain, we have a second equally traumatic bombing," TTMA president Paul Quesnel noted.

He said the TTMA is dismayed by the in effectiveness of the new bomb patrols by the country’s Special Branch.

"Our fundamental right to live in safety has been totally compromised by the spiralling crime situation," he said.
