Two friends killed in crash
TWO friends who were returning home after a night of clubbing, lost their lives when the car they were passengers in, ran off the Churchill Roosevelt Highway and crashed into a tree during the early morning hours yesterday. Joel Johnson, 28, an employee of Colonial Life Ltd and his friend Mark Elliot, 22, who worked at WASA, were thrown out of the car when it struck the tree. The two, who were both seated in the back, suffered massive head and internal injuries and died on the scene. The driver of the car — Stephan Gordon, 22, and front seat passenger Mark Herbert, 28, remained warded in hospital up to late yesterday, both in serious condition. The double fatality has pushed the road death figure for this year, to 116. According to police reports, around 5.45 am, Gordon and his friends were returning from Club Zen, when on reaching Princes Elizabeth Avenue in Valsayn, he lost control of the car which veered off the highway and crashed into a tree. EHS medics and fire officers arrived on the scene and the bodies of the victims were subsequently removed to the Port-of-Spain mortuary, while Gordon and Herbert were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for treatment. The two other occupants of the car were rushed to hospital. In a daze, Leon Johnson yesterday told Newsday his son was a hard worker with a bright future. Meanwhile, Aloiscia Johnson, Elliot’s stepmother, described him (Elliot) as a nice person with a good future and she said she was in a state of shock over his death. A breakdown of this year’s road fatalities statistics reveal that 40 drivers, 44 pedestrians, 23 passengers, five pedal-cyclists and two motorcyclists, have been killed. Sgt Flaveny of the St Joseph Police Station is continuing investigations.
