25 percent of salary
Local pharmacists are to receive a 25 per cent (of salary) responsibility allowance from August 15 until negotiations between the CPO and the PSA are complete, Health Minister John Rahael announced yesterday. Speaking at a post-Cabinet news conference, Rahael added that there was an "expectation" that the pharmacists would oversee the Filipino pharmacists for the 500 mandatory hours they (the filipino pharmacists) are required to work under locally certified pharmacists. Rahael also announced that there would be extended opening hours at hospital pharmacies and health centres from August 15. Rahael said there was an absolute shortage of pharmacists in the country, both in the public and private sector. He said government was doing several things to remedy the situation. He said that 50 pharmacists (trainees) would enter the Pharmacist Assistant Training Programme — 25 from the private sector, and 25 from the public sector. He added that Government also proposed to increase the number of scholarships awarded for the four-year Bsc programme. Rahael said Government had already recruited 24 out of 50 filipino pharmacists — all of whom have full degrees — who will be working in Trinidad and Tobago on a three-year contract.
