Teen shot dead in Bagatelle

An 18-year-old man who was on the run from members of a Laventille gang was shot dead in front of his home at Savannah Terrace, Bagatelle, on Wednesday night, but his body was found around 5.45 am yesterday.

Police reports revealed that Kwasi Wallace was standing in front of his home, when he was confronted by a gunman who fired several shots at him at 10.30 pm on Wednesday.

Wallace, the 218th person murdered this year, was shot in the head and body. He ran a short distance, and then collapsed.

The dead man’s mother, Marva Nichols, said she heard the gunshots but was not aware that her son had been shot.

She said at 5.45 am yesterday, she was called outside of her home and led to an area where her son’s body was slumped in a pool of blood.

The grieving woman added that she still cannot believe that her son is dead, and is calling on the authorities to find the persons who killed her son.

She insisted that her son was a good person and did not deserve to die such a violent and horrible death.

"To the person or persons who killed my son, I know that the Almighty will ensure that justice is served," said Nichols.

At Bagatelle yesterday, Valarie Nichols, the dead man’s aunt, said he lived in Laventille but recently moved to Bagatelle after he received death threats.

She pointed out that Wallace was advised to stay indoors, but he never listened.

She added that when the gunshots were heard on Wednesday night, everyone was afraid to venture outside for fear of being shot. She said she regretted she was not able to protect her nephew.

Police investigators told Newsday that Wallace was threatened by members of a gang after he was accused of being involved in a murder. He knew that he was marked for death.

Sgt Joyce James Martin of the West End Police Station is investigating.
