Bajans arrest Trinis with $364,000 in ‘weed’

A TRINIDADIAN crew aboard the vessel MV Ewl Trinidad was detained by Barbadian police and customs authorities following a search of the vessel in which 91 pounds of marijuana was found at the port in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Saturday.

Officers seized the marijuana which carries an estimated street value of TT$364,000. Up to late yesterday, the detained Trinis were still being quizzed by officers of the Barbados Drug Squad.

It is reported that while the vessel was still berthed at the Bridgetown port, officers from the Drug Squad, customs, coast guard and the police carried out a sting operation.

The operation lasted for four hours during which the 91 pounds of marijuana were found in a metal container inside the MV Ewl Trinidad. Sniffer dogs were also used in the operation.

No one was charged up to late yesterday.

Officers of the Barbados Drug Squad said the vessel had been under surveillance for sometime now.

An undercover officer of the Squad told Newsday the drugs were destined for tourists holidaying in Barbados.

The officer added that most of the marijuana being sold to tourists in Barbados comes from Trinidad and Jamaica. The detained crew told investigators they knew nothing about the drugs.

Yesterday, an attorney visited the detained crew members and briefed them on the situation.

The vessel is now being guarded by the Coast Guard pending instructions from Police Commissioner Darwin Dottin.
