Woman killed in murder/suicide

Leo Nirgoon and Devika Narine were described by people who knew them as a normal couple, but the violent end to their lives together would be anything but normal.

Narine, also known as Vanessa, had her throat slit by Nirgoon before he turned the knife on himself. He added a bottle of deadly toxic liquid for good measure, and later died at hospital.

Narine became this country’s 129th murder victim on Thursday night in the murder/suicide.

According to reports, Narine left her Claxton Bay home early Thursday morning to attend a beauty class at Niherst in South Trinidad. She was seen arguing with Nirgoon at Curepe Junction at 10 am, and police had cause to intercede.

The couple entered a car and was later seen disembarking at a house at 60 El Chorro Road, Maracas/St Joseph, where they continued to argue. Some time later, Narine’s screams were heard and when a 13-year-old girl who lives in one part of the house investigated, she was pushed out of the way by a fleeing Nirgoon who had blood streaming from his neck. The teenager called her father who reported the matter to the nearby police station.

Police found the woman lying in a pool of blood at the entrance to a bedroom with injuries to her neck.

Police later went to Alta Garcia Street where they found Nirgoon under a standpipe. His throat had been slit and there was a bottle of a toxic liquid next to him.

Investigations revealed that the dead woman told two men whom she had relations with, one living in South, the other in the East, that she had secured sleep-in domestic jobs in both areas. She reportedly used that excuse to sleep by both men.

Additional investigations revealed that a man with whom she had had a seven-month relationship lured her to Curepe, where he confronted her on the issue. When she confessed and threatened to end the relationship, her throat was slit. He then attempted to take his own life.

When Newsday visited the couple’s Maracas/St Joseph residence, relatives described them as "young, always quarrelling but moving alone."

"They would quarrel, make up, go and come and speak to no one. Sometimes she spends weeks, sometimes she just visited for one day.

"We know they had problems, but never knew what it was because they did not speak much."

Several taxi drivers who took the couple to and from the house supported the family’s claims.

A relative of the dead girl, who lived next door to the crime scene, is heaping scorn on Maracas/St Joseph police officers, whom she claimed did not take the report seriously.

In her statement, the woman claimed she was lying on her bed when she heard Narine shout, "Look he have a knife." She claimed she heard this three times before the victim fell silent.

When she attempted to push the door open, it was blocked from behind so she ran straight to the police station. The woman said instead of rushing to the scene, police were asking her questions such as, "Why she did not see if the girl dead before she came?" and, "Do you think the girl is dead now?"

She also claimed the officers were taking a serious matter as a joke. The angry woman has since moved out of the house.

Visiting the scene were ASPs Phillip and Farell, Insp Modeste, Sgt Daniel and Cpl de Vignes who is investigating.
