Guyanese-born Trini woman strangled to death in Guyana
A LA BREA man is expected to travel to Guyana this morning to witness an autopsy scheduled to be performed on his 45-year-old wife, who was murdered in her native South American country over the weekend. Mikey Mahadeo of Union Street said his Guyanese-born wife Jankie — living in Trinidad for the past 20 years — left Trinidad last week Monday for West Coast Demerara to visit her ailing mother. On Saturday, the body of Jankie, a mother of three, was found on the Georgetown foreshore. A report in the Guyanese newspaper Stabroek News stated that police believe Jankie was robbed of jewelry and money, then strangled to death. Mahadeo, a watchman, met Jankie and married her about 20 years ago after she migrated from Guyana to Trinidad. She was a housewife and had three children — Michelle, 19, Junior, 14, and Kendra Angel, six years old. Kendra Angel left Trinidad with Jankie for the trip to Guyana. Newsday learnt that the child is currently staying with relatives in Guyana and is awaiting Mahadeo’s visit today. When Newsday visited Mahadeo in La Brea yesterday, he had just returned from the Immigration Office in San Fernando. Mahadeo said he is determined to find out how his wife met her untimely death. "Things don’t just happen just so," the 43-year-old watchman said. "We must get to the root of this," he added. According to the Stabroek report, Jankie was last seen leaving in a taxi after visiting a friend at a store in Bourda. Earlier that day, the report stated, she visited her mother at hospital, then went to the passport office to have her documents renewed. The child was not with her. The report stated that relatives estimated that Jankie had with her some $40,000 Guyanese currency (TT$1,200) and was wearing three gold rings, a gold bracelet, a chain and a pair of earrings. The Stabroek News reported that the body of an unidentified woman was found by the Seawall. Relatives in Guyana still held on to hope that she would return home. On Sunday, after making a report to police, the deceased’s relatives went to a funeral home in Lyken and positively identified Jankie’s body. The money and jewels were missing.
