Sahadeo praise for sugar Rudy

JUNIOR Finance Minister Christine Sahadeo yesterday offered high praises to president general of the All Trinidad Sugar and General Workers’ Trade Union (ATSGWTU), Rudranath Indarsingh, for his representation of former sugar workers in their hour of need.

Sahadeo said she was indeed proud that the country recognised Indarsingh’s efforts, noting that the union leader took the bull by its horns and "did what he had to do." Indarsingh will receive the Chaconia Silver medal today at President’s House — a national award for his contribution to the trade union movement, specifically for overseeing the smooth transformation of Caroni (1975) Ltd which resulted in more than 7,000 former sugar workers receiving VSEP payments and land for residence and agriculture.

Sahadeo, who has responsibility for overseeing the land distribution, attended the final ceremony yesterday for the drawing of lots held at the Ste Madeleine Staff Club. Sahadeo addressed the recipients and told Newsday that Indarsingh played a difficult role in ensuring that workers achieve their entitlement. "Indarsingh, as a union leader, had to do what he had to do. It has been a difficult process for Indarsingh, but he had to do it for the benefit of the former sugar workers," Sahadeo said. She added, "I must say in the end, I think that he (Indarsingh) fought for the workers as he was needed to. It is important that we recognise his efforts." Sahadeo noted that it was an honour for Indarsingh to be nominated for a national award. From 2003 to 2005, Indarsingh repeatedly called on the Government to clearly outline its plans for the restructuring of the sugar industry, and the training and honouring of promises of land to the workers.
