Eight in custody for boy’s fake kidnap

EIGHT teenagers, including Anthony Saroop, the 15-year-old Marabella youth who reported he had recently been kidnapped, were being held in police custody up to late yesterday.

Police investigators said the teens — seven boys and a 14-year-old girl — are all friends of Saroop. Seven of the suspects of Williamsville, Marabella and San Fernando are under the age of 16.

The other suspect is 19 years old. They underwent interrogation at the Marabella Police Station for several hours yesterday.

Police told Newsday that one of the teenagers gave a statement yesterday confessing that the alleged "abduction" of Saroop was a hoax. Police said they obtained a confession from one of the teens that Saroop’s abduction was staged in an attempt to extort money from his (Saroop’s) mother, Patricia.

Saroop went missing on August 8 and attempts to find him proved futile for 18 days. On Sunday at about 1 am, Saroop turned up at his aunt’s house in Gasparillo.

However, Saroop was picked up by police hours after his release and gave a statement. On Monday he was again taken in by members of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad where he was interrogated.

Police investigating the incident could not say if the eight teens would be charged with an offence relating to Saroop’s disappearance.
