QUITTING, OR NOT
Up to presstime there was no word on whether UNC leader Basdeo Panday was proposing to step down as political leader, or whether he planned to toss his hat back in the ring. What is certain is that Panday has cancelled his plans to attend a conference in Fiji and will be in Trinidad and Tobago presumably during the nomination period- September 1 to 8. Yesterday, the UNC Executive met at Rienzi Complex Couva, a meeting which Panday attended. After this, Panday met with several senior MPs, including Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Winston Dookeran, as well as members of the Executive. The question of leadership succession has been very much alive and fuelled by recent reports that Panday was considering leaving the political scene. Furthermore the question of whether Panday should play an influential role in determining his successor, should he decide to quit politics, has also been the subject of much discussion.
