Cop’s house gutted by blaze
A POLICEMAN sustained burns about his body when his house caught fire on Thursday night while he was asleep in his bedroom. Police were yesterday investigating an arson attack on PC Bishnu Cholai, who recently received death threats. The fire gutted the house, valued at $170,000, located at Solomon Trace, Cedar Hill Road, Princes Town. Cholai, 52, resided at the house with his common-law-wife, Victoria Kissoon, and their 15-year-old daughter, Vashti. The policeman was at home alone when the fire broke out. According to a police report, Cholai, who is attached to the Tableland Police Station, was asleep in his bedroom at 8.15 pm, when he was awakened by the feeling of heat inside the house. Police said when Cholai went to investigate, he was confronted by fire in the living-room, and he scampered through the burning house. According to the report, neighbours called the Princes Town Fire Station. Firemen arrived on the scene to see the house engulfed in flames. Firemen were able to save Cholai’s car, but the report stated that the B-15 Nissan Sentra, valued at $60,000, was partially damaged. Cholai sustained minor burns on the left side of his body. He was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated. A team of fire prevention officers and policemen are investigating the cause of the fire. Police investigating the incident confirmed that Cholai had received death threats earlier in the week. However, police said the threats were unrelated to Cholai’s duties as a police officer. Sgt Errol Ramdath of the Princes Town CID is heading investigations.
