Valencia man killed in three-car accident

A 26-YEAR-OLD man died instantly after he lost control of his car which crashed into a truck along the Valencia stretch at about 11 am yesterday.

The death of Tito Tengue of Valencia is the nation’s 134th road fatality this year.

According to police reports, Tengue was driving his car west along the stretch with his brother Travis, when he lost control of the car. It collided with a truck that was heading in the opposite direction.

The truck driver subsequently lost control and crashed into another car that contained a 55-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son.

Tengue suffered massive head injuries and died on the spot, while Travis escaped unhurt.

Overcome with shock and grief over the death of his brother, Travis could not be interviewed by police on the scene yesterday.

The truck driver who also appeared to be in a state of shock, was taken to the Sangre Grande District Hospi-tal for treatment.

The occupants of the car that the truck slammed into — a woman and her teenage son — were also taken to the district hospital where they were treated and subsequently transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. Up to late yesterday they were warded in critical condition.

The three-vehicle smash-up caused a major traffic pile-up along the stretch as other motorists slowed their vehicles to view the crash scene.

ASP Bernard and a party of officers from the Eastern Division were quickly on the scene to regulate the traffic.

Police officers had to use their private cell phones to try to contact the district medical officer who had to view the body before it could be taken to the mortuary.

Tengue’s relatives arrived on the scene and wept openly as they saw the corpse of their relative.

Cpl Gopaul of Eastern Division Police is investigating.
