WASA retirees get pension increase
THE WATER and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and the National Union of Government and Federated Workers (NUGFW) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that guaranteed a minimum monthly pension of $1,500 to retired daily rated workers. The sum is separate from the $27.25 monthly cost-of-living-allowance. The Concordat, which is an addendum to the current 2002/2004 Collective Agreement, grants two other benefits — a lump sum funeral grant on the death of a pensioner equal to six times the person’s monthly pension and appointment of a Pensioner Observer to attend and participate in Management Committee meetings, but without voting rights. In an address preceding the signing, Errol Grimes, WASA’s Chief Executive Officer, said the articles of the agreement are to be implemented by September 30 and the 1,064 retirees on roll would be receiving retroactive payments as far as January 1, 2003. Describing the MOA as a progressive one, Grimes pointed out, however, that pension plans rarely withstand the increasing cost of living. He therefore challenged the NUGFW "to take a bold step beyond mere worker representation by counselling members on investment opportunities that would enhance their future growth post retirement." Grimes added that WASA is prepared to do its part also through the introduction of personal development programmes, with input from the union. NUGFW President Robert Guiseppi said he welcomed any opportunity to join with WASA in enhancing the position of employees. He said the MOA "breaks new ground for workers". "Never before in history has a pensioner been allowed to be represented on a management committee," he said.
