St Ann’s Hospital at triple capacity

THE ST ANN’S HOSPITAL, which currently houses 900 patients, is overcrowded according to North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) chief executive Cynthia Carrington-Murray. Carrington-Murray noted that out of the 900 patients at the institution, 600 patients did not belong there.

Speaking on Thursday during the NWRHA’s public board meeting, Carring-ton-Murray said many of the patients were chronic and not in need of acute care. She said one of the reasons why so many patients remained at the St Ann’s Hospital was because of the lack of proper homes or institutions to house them in.

Carrington-Murray said the decanting of residents would be carefully done with the assistance of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Development, which she said would be working together to place the patients in homes.

"If we could bring down the number of patients in St Ann’s to 200 acute patients, then we would be able to better manage the hospital," said Carrington-Murray.

Other issues being addressed at the St Ann’s Hospital include the reopening of the kitchen, which will be done at the end of September, and the restoration of the plumbing system, which Carrington-Murray said was badly damaged as patients would stuff clothing and other items into the toilets.
