Fisherman killed in boat crash

MORUGA POLICE are investigating the death of a 22-year-old fisherman who died after two fishing boats collided in the La Ruffin River yesterday morning. Vishnu Ramdhanie, of Oropuche South Trace, Scale No 4, Barrackpore, was pronounced dead at the San Fernando General Hospital where he was rushed for treatment after the collision. Police reports said the incident occurred around 9.45 am while Ramdhanie was heading out to sea on his pirogue “Hamlet.” Reports indicated that another pirogue carrying three persons, which was headed for shore, collided with Ramdhanie’s vessel.

Police believe Ramdhanie hit his head in the crash and was knocked unconscious in the boat. Persons in the other boat went to his assistance and brought him to land, police said. He was taken to hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was taken to the San Fernando Mortuary where an autopsy is expected to be performed tomorrow. Police were told the deceased had recently purchased the fishing vessel to earn a living. Investigators have since detained and questioned three men, of Moruga, in connection with the incident. Ag Cpl Sieunarine is continuing investigations.
