Keeping patients’ health records in order
THE HEALTH records of patients in Trinidad and Tobago will be improved in the coming years as the College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of TT (COSTAATT) launched its new Certificate Programme in Health Records Science. The launch was held at COSTAATT’s campus in Port-of-Spain. The programme would link students directly with the health industry which, according to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Reynold Cooper, needed to be improved. Cooper said in a survey conducted by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) in 2000 on TT’s medical records, the results were that an absence of training in the field was the problem in maintaining accurate records. Students embarking on the programme will become custodians of records, be able to share patient information, access records with ease and maintain records in order. Twenty-five students have already registered for the programme, which began right after the launch.
