No serial bomber in TT

Acting Police Commissioner Glen Roach yesterday denied that a serial bomber was on the rampage in Trinidad and Tobago.

At a ceremony where 219 corporals were promoted to the rank of sergeant at the training room at Police Headquarters, Roach told Newsday that there has been a series of bombings, not a serial bomber.

The bomb blasts occurred on Frederick Street, George Street and at KFC on Independence Square.

"We are doing the best we can," he stated.

However, addressed the 219 sergeants, Roach reassured them that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service was on a transformation drive.

The last promotion to the rank of sergeant took place two years ago.

"It is also history that it is the first time in 12 years that promotion was achieved based on merit," said Roach.

He continued, "There is a lot of frowning on the service and the public has lost faith in the police. We need to make Trinidad and Tobago proud of the service."

He said the Police Service should be the national provider of customer service and relations.

"The police are now going through trying times, and we are changing the court system and crime control," he said.

He told the sergeants to continue to act like future inspectors.

Roach also added that a statement last week suggesting that "if you see a dog fight call the police," was taken out of context.

Roach concluded by telling the officers, "We need to be responsive, reliable, have good manners and be fair despite the shortage of manpower. Our integrity is at stake."

Some of the officers promoted to sergeant are Ajith Persad, Picton Henry, Glen Dillon, Sharon Alfred and Peter Dominique.
