Get foreign help to fight crime

The Chamber of Commerce yesterday called on Government to seek foreign help to deal with the crime situation, saying that people are no longer safe in their homes.

The business community said Government should "immediately bring in foreign personnel to take control of the crime situation."

In a press statement yesterday, the chamber said, "It is abundantly clear that the Police Service has failed in its duty to protect and serve the citizens of TT."

They emphasised their position by commenting on the kidnapping of Edward Khoury, nephew of Minister of Health, John Rahael.

"Today’s abduction of a citizen from the presumed security of his office demonstrates that citizens are not safe in their homes, businesses nor on the streets of our nation," the chamber said. The chamber said it was "incensed that the Government and the Opposition could not find common ground for enacting the required legislation" to deal with rising crime.

They stressed that the Police Service had the ultimate responsibility for the protection of the citizens of TT, and that reform was essential to achieve this.
