Laventille man in court for fraud
A Laventille man who was arrested this week by police officers appeared yesterday before a Port- of-Spain magistrate facing six indictable fraud charges. Ray Anthony Henry, 35, of Erica Street and Eastern Main Road, Laventille, stood before Magistrate Ejenny Espinet in the city’s First Court, where the charges were read to him. The first charge stated that Henry was held at Laventille on Tuesday September 20 with a false driver’s permit in the name of Alister Burgess. The second charge stated that Henry fraudulently received $15,000 as down payment from Devanand Soodeen on July 1 in Tunapuna for the purchase of a lot of land in Marabella, worth $90,000. Another charge stated that the accused received $9,000 from Indira Ramcharan for the purchase of land in Marabella worth $90,000 on July 2 in Princes Town. Henry is also accused of receiving $15,000 from Anthony Choo Lin Chew on June 29 at San Fernando for the purchase of land worth $90,000. A fifth charge stated that Henry fraudulently received $20,000 at St Augustine from Michael Borneo for the purchase of land worth $120,000 on August 5. The sixth charge read to Henry stated that on June 6, the accused received $8,000 at San Fernando from Satesh Soodeensingh for the purchase of land worth $80,000. Police prosecutor Sgt Morgan told the magistrate that she had not yet received instructions on how she should proceed with the matter, and requested that the matter be adjourned. Morgan also informed the court that the accused had not yet been traced. Henry, who was not represented by an attorney, told the court that he had one matter pending before the courts, explaining that he had been charged with receiving stolen goods. That matter, the accused said, was being heard in a San Fernando Court. After that, the magistrate informed the accused that all matters pertaining to other jurisdictions will not be dealt with until the issue of his tracing is complete. "Bail will also be dealt with on the next occasion," said the magistrate. Henry will reappear on September 28.
