Morvant mom shot dead

A Morvant woman was shot dead yesterday in full view of her seven-year-old son while walking through a track at about 7.25 am at Never Dirty, Morvant.

Store worker Sparkle Phillip was shot once in the head, and was pronounced dead at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

Police reports revealed that Phillip, 23, was on her way to drop off Nyacko Sylvester at the Morvant EC School, when the killer walked up to her, pointed the gun at her head and fired one fatal shot. The bullet entered the right side of her head and came out the left side. Phillip was reportedly still alive when she was rushed to the hospital by her uncle Edward Phillip. When Newsday visited the scene of the country’s 274th murder, relatives of the dead woman said she had complained that a man had threatened to kill her. Phillip was described as a good mother and a private person.

Residents of Pitch Road, Morvant, near the crime scene, expressed horror over the killing.

Between Friday night and yesterday, five people were murdered in the Morvant area. Acting Police Commissioner GXlen Roach also expressed concern over the spate of killings.

He said while the police are doing their best to deal with the crime situation, he feels that assistance from members of the public will go a long way in solving crime.
