Woman unable to move

"My head hurts!" complained Germaine Baptiste from a bed at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (PoSGH). Her head had been bandaged and her neck was in a plastic cast. Baptiste was knocked unconscious on Tuesday morning near the Salvatori building on Independence Square. She was walking near the galvanise fence when falling bricks from a scaffolding hit her on the head. Police officers at the Mobile Unit attached to the Eye in the Sky witnessed the incident and called for a police vehicle to assist her.

Baptiste had been on her way to work as a housekeeper in Laventille, where she also looked after two children.

Baptiste told Newsday she was looking forward to receiving her pay cheque when she was knocked out by the falling bricks from the building.

"I can’t stay here. I have to get my pay," she whispered.

Baptiste did not even recognise her own daughter, Patsy Baptiste, who came to visit her at the women’s ward at PoSGH. She also complained of noises and is unable to move.

Baptiste is suffering from a fractured neck and possible skull injuries.

She was received an X-ray and a Cat Scan to determine the extent of her injuries.

The family is hoping to move Baptiste from the PoSGH to another health facility to receive better treatment.
