Extra classes syndrome
THE EDITOR: Our government’s plodding at provision for a fair chance at upward social mobility is always cause for applause. A case in point is within the education system. The supply of free meals and school textbooks are a few of the equalising tools required to level the serious field of educational chances. We must be vigilant, to preserve our democracy; lest, what is given with God’s hand, is taken away by an evil hand, at both primary and secondary schools, by the extra-lessons-teacher-vampire. On the one hand, we write our editorials and full pages on the activities of one group of our citizens who are quarrying illegally; but, on the other hand, what do we do, when it comes to entrenched, criminal activity within the public’s educational institutions? Nothing, and the wicked prosper, in an institution that is rapidly competing with the home to become the leading socialising force in our society. Recently, teachers received an adjustment in salaries, reflecting comparable market value. And, on top of that, a subsidised Health Insurance Plan; and, yet, they are allowed to constantly blast away at one of our most fragile resources — our hapless students. Teachers are undoing attempts at the provision of the democratisation of education; they are also sending a spiralling signal to the rest of our society: Get, steal or whatever at any cost. It is a getaway horse with wealth on its back. Madame Minister of Education, please, keep the teachers where they belong, in the classroom, and monitor them, to prevent the extra classes syndrome — the fabrication. What more do these teachers want? A rod, with which to "chook" God? This is spiritual wickedness. I say arrest them, exorcise them! And may God bless our nation, once more. RICHARD DINDIAL Cunupia
