Ordeal at UWI
THE EDITOR: Please allow me space in your widely read newspaper to express my aversion concerning poor student advisory and reception at the Administration department at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine campus. Upon accompanying a colleague who was interested in entry at the university, I witnessed, first hand, his embarrassing ordeal while he attempted to bring to the attention of the assistant registrar an obvious error, printed on one of the campus’ notice boards. My colleague noticed that his name was not printed on a list of students at the campus, despite having fulfilled all matriculation requirements. He concurred that this was clearly a mistake and proceeded to the student affairs department and was referred to an official. Her cold demeanour coupled with her rude welcoming was just the beginning of the embarrassment. She requested that her subject, my colleague, write his name on a piece of paper which she hurriedly took to the back and instead of consulting with her database personnel, to at least confirm that there was an error and if possible rectify it, she returned approximately five minutes later with some notes written next to his name, she then stared blankly at the both of us, held the paper up at eye level and tore it in two while bellowing "you do not satisfy the matriculation requirements to enter this university." In my opinion, her behaviour reached new heights of unprofessionalism. She should have proposed an appointment to thoroughly assist my colleague and ensure correction in the entry of his A’Level grades, as well as display the attitude of one who should be deemed a professional.
