Ramesh confirms Newsday exclusive report
In confirming the report published exclusively in Monday’s Newsday, headlined "Panday to make Ramesh a UNC senator," former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj has issued a press release stating that Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday has offered him (Ramesh) an opportunity to serve as an Opposition senator. Ramesh stated in the release, "I am thankful and deeply honoured to have been invited by the honourable Leader of the Opposition and chairman of the United National Congress, Basdeo Panday, to serve this beloved nation as an Opposition senator. Noting that the country is under siege by the criminal element, Ramesh revealed details of a meeting he held with Panday on Saturday October 8. In the release, Ramesh noted that, "In the discussions Mr Panday held with me, we recognised the serious state of affairs that exist in our country, and I assured him of my willingness to serve our country as an Opposition senator, but that it was not possible for me to serve at this time. This is due to the heavy commitments which I have undertaken and which I now have. I, therefore, would not be able at this time to give maximum service to our country as a senator. Mr Panday understood my position. Ramesh committed himself to a serious Opposition role, however, when he stated in the release, "I gave my commitment of my willingness to cooperate with him and to assist him in any way possible to promote and foster unity of the people of Trinidad and Tobago, and to do what it takes to rescue Trinidad and Tobago from the present Government."
