Senior citizens in wilderness

THE EDITOR: The Minister of Finance gave out a lot of goodies but as is now the norm, retirees have once again been neglected. This year there was again no effort to address their plight. Retirees are on fixed incomes which do not respond to inflation.

The increase in National Insurance retirement benefit two years ago has been overtaken by increases in the cost of living and there is now the ludicrous position of a contributory plan paying a lower benefit than a non-contributory plan, ie Old Age Pension. The call for Old Age Pension to be paid to all retired persons regardless of income is legitimate, and the age of qualification for Old Age Pension should be reduced to sixty years, the same as National Insurance.
