Change of Opposition Leader not discussed
The issue of Basdeo Panday handing the reins of the Opposition Leader over to Winston Dookeran was not raised at the UNC’s first executive meeting. The matter, which is a major issue of contention within the UNC, was not raised by anyone, including Dookeran. A source stated that the general feeling was that this issue was something that the "two big men" should discuss in private, rather than in the presence of 16 other persons. "When they discuss it, they can then come to the executive," the source stated. At a news conference at Rienzi Complex after the meeting, Panday said the meeting discussed the procedure and conduct of the party’s business and the way forward. He said next Wednesday there would be a special meeting with all candidates who fought the elections — whether they won or lost — to begin the healing process. This meeting would be used as a catalyst "for healing the wounds inflicted during the campaign," he said. Panday also announced that the executive would be going on a retreat to bring all members of the executive closer together and to show the country that the party is moving forward. Dookeran said the issue of the recount was raised at the meeting and would be discussed in due course by the executive, along with the report of the Elections Committee and "what occurred during the recount." Dookeran stated that the main thing was to work in a united manner to build a professional party. At the meeting, a letter from Jack Warner explaining his absence was read for the records. The letter stated that Warner could not come until the issue of the recount is settled. The issue of Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj’s senatorship was not raised. Panday said there was nothing further to discuss on that matter.
