Man killed in crash in Gasparillo
A TRIP to San Fernando to get a late night snack turned tragic after a 25-year-old man was killed and three other persons injured in a two vehicle smash-up in Gasparillo. The deceased, Navada Webb, of Hardbargain, Williamsville, was in the front passenger seat of his friend’s car when the crash occurred at the intersection of Bonne Aventure Main Road and Parforce Road. It was about 2.40 am yesterday that Webb’s friend, Chris Davidson, 25, of Buen Intento Road, Williamsville, was proceeding along the Bonne Aventure Main Road. They were on their way to drop their other friend, Alicia Bebe, 25, who was in the back seat, at her home in Whiteland. But, according to a police report, as they approached Parforce Road, a twin cab pick- up van, which was travelling in the opposite direction swerved in front of their vehicle to turn into Parforce Road. Davidson’s car, a police report stated, smashed into the van, which was driven by Suresh Ramlal, 24, of Charles Street, Gasparillo. Webb died on the spot and his body was viewed by District Medical Officer Dr Arjoonsingh, who ordered its removal to the mortuary of the San Fernando General Hospital. Bebe suffered a broken leg and is warded in a stable condition at the San Fernando General Hospital. Davidson, who received a gash on his left eye, and Ramlal were both treated and discharged. Yesterday, Davidson who was sporting a bandage on his left eye, told Newsday they had gone to San Fernando to purchase something to eat before they dropped Bebe home, but everywhere was closed. "Everything happened so fast. One minute we were talking the next I was looking at the body of my dead friend, who is also my child godfather," he added. Still trying to come to terms with his friend’s death, Davidson said he had not yet visited Webb’s relatives, adding, "I want to tell them (Webb’s family) I am very sorry about what happen and to accept my condolences." On the brink of tears yesterday Webb’s mother, Claudette described him as a loving and respectable young man. She said he was her only son and youngest child. His sister, Natasha, 31, said Webb had completed a mechanical course at Petrotrin in July and was registered to begin work soon with a Port-of-Spain firm. Cpl James of the Gasparillo Police Station is continuing investigations.
