Murder trial adjourned

The key State witness in the trial of a murdered Carenage man did not testify yesterday as expected because State attorneys in the trial wanted an adjournment to deal with new information that came to light.

In her opening address, State prosecutor Debbie Ann Bassaw said that the female witness was coming to tell the 12-member jury how she looked through a space between some missing floor boards in her house and saw accused Jovan Maxwell shoot Darrel Lewis in her house.

Maxwell, 18, aka "Doo Goo" of Morvant, is before Justice Prakash Moosai in the Port-of-Spain First Criminal Court charged with the August 24, 2004, murder of Lewis at Calvary Hill in Morvant.

When the matter was called yesterday, PC Intab Ramjohn testified and tendered the certificates of analysis for a bullet and blood sample into evidence.

After his testimony, senior State attorneys Jeron Joseph, Bassaw, and defence attorneys Wayne Sturge and Leon Gokool met with Moosai in chambers.

When the judge returned to court, he told the jury that as a result of discussions with the attorneys, he would adjourn the hearing until today. He explained that the attorneys needed some time to deal with certain matters.

The matter was then adjourned to today.
