I went after my wife

In a written statement, murder accused Christna Basdeo told police that he was going after his wife with a cutlass, and not baby Kyle. However, his wife Toy Basdeo pushed the baby, who got cut, the accused stated.

Justice Herbert Volney, who is presiding in the San Fernando High Court in Christna’s trial for Kyle’s murder, allowed a written statement to be read to the 12 jurors. Basdeo, of Ganga Trace, Manahambre Road, Crystal View, Princes Town, is alleged to have inflicted a fatal chop wound to Kyle on the night of November 11, 2003, at their home.

The incident occurred while the baby was asleep in his mother’s arms. The infant sustained a six-inch wound to the skull.

Sgt Stephen Maynard testified that on November 12, 2003, in the presence of Justice of the Peace Nazim Muradali, Basdeo dictated a statement to him. Maynard read the statement yesterday to the jury, which said that on the day of the killing, Basdeo went home after cutting bamboo.

He asked his wife, Toy, for a meal, but an argument erupted. Murder accused Basdeo stated that he had a cutlass and he was going to "planasse" (beat with flat side of cutlass) his wife. Maynard read the statement in which Basdeo stated, "I raised the cutlass to planasse she and she had the child in she hand. She pushed the child on me and the child get cut."

The trial continues on Monday.
