Lawyer wants judges to step down

ATTORNEY Gregory Delzin yesterday asked three Appeal Court judges to remove themselves from hearing a murder appeal.

Delzin, who represents appellant Robert Taylor, said the court went outside of its jurisdiction and conducted an investigation into the matter, when it had no power to do so.

Delzin produced legal authorities to support his claim and said someone watching from the outside must have confidence in the criminal justice system.

"We are fair-minded. It is not my intention to bring this court and the system of justice into disrepute," Delzin added.

The court, comprising Justices Stanley John, Ivor Archie and Paula Mae Weekes, will give its decision on November 11.

Robert Taylor and Mervyn Parris were convicted and sentenced to hang for the murder of broadcaster Anthony Gittens, in San Fernando.

Ravi Rajcoomar, who represents the other accused Mervyn Parris, adopted the submissions of his colleague.
