CHAMBER: ‘DEATH MARCH’ was VERY SUCCESSFUL

The "Death March" which on October 22 has been described by the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce as having been "very successful."

In a release yesterday, the chamber commended the thousands of citizens who attended the march, saying that it was particularly pleased that so many of the chamber’s members united with citizens from all walks of life to express their frustration at the spiralling crime rate.

It also acknowledged the Keith Noel 136 Organising Committee for keeping to its promise of no politics.

The chamber said, "The (committee) had assured everyone that this was not going to be a political rally, but one of citizen alliance, and the assurance indeed materialised."

The chamber also took the opportunity to once again call on members of the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament to stop "politicking" and put the country first, even offering a 44-point plan of action to help alleviate the crimewave.

"While we are aware of and welcome the fact that the Government is putting in place a plan for the transformation of the Police Service, that is a long-term plan. Our citizens continue to desperately call for immediate sustained action that can be seen and felt," stated the chamber. It warned that citizens would "continue to agitate" should the Government fail to act immediately. In closing, the chamber commended Stephen Cadiz and the committee for the march, and saluted the artistes who performed songs at the march free of charge.

"This groundswell of unity of people and purpose must not be ignored," the chamber stated.
