Classmates celebrate Kurnica’s life

CLASSMATES and relatives of 13-year-old Kurnica Joseph sang joyful songs as they celebrated her life during her funeral service at the Hummingbird panyard in St James yesterday.

Joseph, a student of the Diego Martin Junior Secondary School, died of heart failure after collapsing on the school compound last Thursday, after she complained of chest pains during a break in physical education. Several ministers who spoke at the service told the gathering of family and friends that they did not have to be old or sick in bed to die, and that evil had taken over the heart of the land if such a young person could die.

In the eulogy, Joseph’s form teacher "Miss Lewis" described her student as a caring and respectful young woman. Lewis said she was an aspiring leader who put all her time and energy into her work.

Joseph’s favourite subjects were Spanish, Music, Home Economics, Social Studies, Physical Education and Agricultural Science. Lewis lamented that Joseph’s dreams will never be attained as she had dreamt of being a singer and wanted to live in a mansion.

Joseph was buried at the Western Cemetery, St James.
