PoS police hold Divali celebrations

ALTHOUGH Commissioner of Police Trevor Paul reportedly refusal to permit the lighting of deyas at six police stations in South Trinidad, PoS police held their second annual celebrations at the old police headquarters yesterday.

The explosion on Henry Street yesterday morning did cause the "lighting up" to be delayed.

Paul was listed to bring the Divali greeting, but he was taken up with the Henry Street incident and Assistant Commissioner of Police Randolph Protain was asked to stand in for Paul. While doing the honours on behalf of the Commissioner, Protain said, "The Commissioner of Police is looking forward to having it (celebration) continued over the years."

Before a sparse audience earlier, senior human resource officer, Maria Joseph, called on her fellow workers to focus on the positives rather than the negatives that are plaguing the country at this time. She likened the negatives of drugs and crime to a representation of Rawan. Therefore, to overcome these ills of society, Joseph said, "let us go back to basics and let’s have peace, love and harmony."

She added that the significance of Divali was about good over evil, light over darkness, justice over injustices and knowledge over ignorance.

The programme of events included Pundit Keith Pesaud’s performance of a puja, a dance by Candice Bedasi and friends from the Durga Shakti Dance Co, bhajans done by PC Satnarine Ramdeo and PC Parasan Ramsumair and the Police Sangeet Orchestra, and modelling of traditional Indian garments and the symbolic lighting of deyas.
