Cop without a heart
THE EDITOR: Please grant me a space in your widely read newspaper to express my views on an aspect that affects me and furthermore, the nation. Recently, one evening as I was returning home from classes with a friend, on the way home I mentioned that I needed to stop off at the ABM which is located not too far form my home. However, on approaching home I indicated to him that I would stop off home first and which resulted in him stopping abruptly. He was therefore unable to give indication to the driver behind that he was about to stop. Incidentally, there was a police jeep behind us with two officers, I immediately got out and apologised and so did my friend. The officer in the passenger side was somewhat lenient, his cohort on the other hand was very rude and vindictive. He ordered him to stop off at the nearby Police Station so that he could check his relevant documents, which he willingly did. I later learnt from my friend that the same officer had decided to summons him to court for the matter. My argument firstly, is that whether this officer has the right to conduct himself in such a manner? Is there any committee or board that goes about investigating the way officers go about dealing with the law-abiding citizens of this country? Secondly, we drivers upon acquiring our permits are required to pass a regulations test, one of the directives is that a driver must stay at least three carriage lengths away from the vehicle ahead, I wonder if this particular officer is aware of this? We all make mistakes and if something so trivial results in a manner like this, I sincerely feel sorry for all the other road users who will one day face the very same dilemma. Furthermore, what our country has come to in terms of the morals and ethics instilled in the personnel of our Protective Services? VICTORIA SHUNUN Chaguanas
