Taxi driver’s bail now $750,000


A TAXI DRIVER who was charged with defrauding Republic Bank of more than $3.5 million, yesterday had his bail reduced from $2 million to $750,000.


Kurt Dass got the reduction before Justice Prakash Moosai in the Port-of-Spain High Court.


The application for reduced bail was made by attorney Ian Brooks. Dass was granted $750,000 with a surety to be approved by the Clerk of the Peace. Dass must surrender his passport and must report to the Chaguanas Police Station every Wednesday between 1 pm and 5 pm.


An application made on behalf of co-accused Daneshwar Deolall was withdrawn yesterday. He remains in custody on $2 million bail.


The two men were each granted $2 million bail during the week when they appeared before Magistrate Ejenny Espinet in the Port-of-Spain First Magistrates’ Court.


Dass, a 31-year-old taxi driver of Chaguanas, and Deolall, of Marabella, are both charged with uttering a false cheque at a Republic Bank branch on September 14.


Both accused men will reappear in court on November 3.
