Badjohn cop transferred

AN off-duty officer attached to the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB), who was involved in the beating and attack of a uniformed officer last Saturday night at Queen’s Hall, has been transferred to an unidentified Port-of-Spain unit. The transfer will take effect from mid-November.

An investigation had been launched into the matter based on the submission of a report to Police Commissioner Trevor Paul by Snr Supt Errol Denoon.

According to reports, the constable and his girlfriend entered the hall for a concert held for soca singer Lord Nelson at 8.30 pm, and the officer, with alcoholic beverage in hand, was misbehaving.

An usher warned him that the consumption of alcohol in the auditorium was not allowed, and asked him to consume his drink outside.

The GEB cop with more than 15 years service became abusive and started making threats. The usher reported the incident to a security guard at the hall who also faced resistance.

The usher then walked to a mobile police post across the road from Queen’s Hall and filed a report. Accompanied by PC McDonald, the GEB officer was again asked to leave the auditorium. PC McDonald held the GEB officer’s hand and attempted to lead him out of the hall, when the latter grabbed the young PC’s baton and proceeded to beat him.

The injured PC McDonald, who sustained a broken finger, grabbed for his gun as he fell to the ground, when Sgt Boxhill of the Homicide Bureau intervened.

Investigations revealed that there was another confrontation between Sgt Boxhill and McDonald, when the latter refused to hand over his gun because he did not know the senior officer.

ASP Julie Carrington has been mandated to investigate.
