No word on Manning, Panday crime talks
NO ARRANGEMENT has been reached yet for a proposed meeting between Prime Minister Patrick Manning and Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday about how Government and the Opposition could cooperate in dealing with the crime problem in Trinidad and Tobago. UNC political leader Winston Dookeran offered to bring Manning and Panday together to discuss the country’s crime situation, in keeping with a call made by President George Maxwell Richards at the ceremonial opening of Parliament in September for greater cooperation between Government and Opposition in dealing with crime. In concluding the 2005/2006 Budget debate in the House of Representatives on October 7, the Prime Minister accepted Dookeran’s offer. Panday also agreed to the meeting in principle. Opposition sources yesterday said there has been no word to date on when this meeting would take place, but they remain hopeful that it would. Manning is currently attending the Fourth Summit of the Americas in Mar Del Plata, Argentina, and will return home tomorrow. Public Administration and Information Minister Dr Lenny Saith was appointed to act as Prime Minister during Manning’s absence.
