War veterans remember their colleagues of World War II
The Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) along with the Trinidad and Tobago Legion, the Armed Forces Veterans Association and the Military History and Aerospace Museum, yesterday hosted an Annual Church Service at the All Saints Anglican Church to remember those who fell and fought during World War II. The service is just one of the many events carded for the upcoming Veterans’ Week. Member of the Second Anniversary of Veteran’s Week 2005 Organising Committee, William Charles told Newsday that “the week helps us to remember those who fought and those who fell during World War II.” Charles joined the Army in 1940 and ended his service in 1944. He added that the activities helped bring back old memories for him.
Delivering a stirring sermon, Pastor Horace Stevenson of the Church of God of Prophecy, Cunupia, told members of the congregation that “the war is not over.” “The greatest war” he said “is continuing not in the physical but in the spiritual. We are constantly engaged in a spiritual warfare.” Stevenson, also a retired soldier advised “we must fight this war on our knees in prayer because our God is a God of victory.” In RAFA there are about 25 members who fought in World War II. The upcoming week will be marked by several events including a fund-raising dinner, a display of World War II weapons and artefacts and a wreath laying ceremony.
