Another worker killed
TRINIDAD Cement Ltd (TCL) will engage in a 24-hour shutdown of its operations as a mark of respect for the deaths of two contract workers in just three days. On Saturday, 17-year-old Dinesh Rampersad of St Margaret’s Village, Claxton Bay, was killed almost instantly when he fell into a silo and became submerged in cement. Rampersad was a contract worker. On Monday evening, 34-year-old electrician, Sunil Balgobin, an employee of Insertech (Caribbean) Ltd, had just completed his shift and was walking along a platform leading to a silo, when he fell. A police report stated that Balgobin fell about 50 feet to the ground. He was rushed to the Augustus Long Hospital, Pointe-a-Pierre. He died at about 11.15 am yesterday. TCL’s corporate communications manager, Michelle Langton, said that a 24-hour shutdown will go into effect as a mark of "respect" for the two men. She added, "It would be a day of reflection." Langton said no work would be done by contractors at TCL until a thorough investigation into both accidents is conducted by the company. Yesterday, at Balgobin’s home, eldest brother, Vino, said the family was told by company personnel that his brother had fallen on a length of pipe and sustained severe head injuries. He said his brother’s employer, Insertech, promised to assist in covering funeral costs for Balgobin. An autopsy is expected to be performed on Balgobin’s body today.
