South motorists hit by another gas shortage
MOTORISTS pressed the panic button yesterday when rumours of a gas shortage caused scores of them to pull into gas stations. The result was long lines at several gas stations in South Trinidad, but no gas. Some service station owners complained that their reserves had run low on premium unleaded, super and diesel gas. However, National Protroleum (NP) yesterday promised that gas trucks would replenish fuel stocks. Newsday learnt that fuel was not delivered to stations on Monday or for most of the day yesterday. NP truckers, Newsday learnt, raised a hue and cry over safety issues. An Oilfield Workers’ Trade Union official yesterday said that truckers were unhappy over a decision last week to replace two gantry operators, who fill the fuel tankers at the Pointe-a-Pierre gas bond, with two inexperienced workers. By midday yesterday, the union official said, the truckers were back on the job, much to the relief of gas station owners. Truckers were expected to deliver supplies from 6 pm yesterday.
