TT — a dwarf among the giants
THE EDITOR: As defender Dennis "Beanstalk" Lawrence rose majestically four feet from the ground in the 49th minute and beat the despairing Bahraini goalkeeper, a nation of 1.3 million people froze in anticipation. At the final whistle, the intense pressure valve from the veins of thousands of people were released and a nation broke out into an orgy of wild celebrations. Germany 2006 will now host the smallest nation to qualify but already the mosaic of Trinidad and Tobago’s musical strains is resonating throughout the sporting world. Our country is presently gripped by the scourge of crime and other serious social problems. The unprecedented success of the football team has allowed us to exhale our frustrations and has widely opened the window for real unity and progress. I salute Jack Warner and all members of the supporting cast who have once again catapulted our beautiful nation into the international stage of world recognition. Reza Abasali Barataria
