Painter guilty of manslaughter
For killing his wife on Valentine’s Day three years ago, Siparia painter Clide Boban was on Wednesday found guilty of manslaughter by a jury in the San Fernando High Court. Boban, 42, of Sunset Drive, will be sentenced today by Justice Devan Rampersad. Boban beat his wife with a piece of pipe on February 14, 2003, but he contended that the attack was provoked earlier that day after he had bought her a bottle of wine. After deliberating for two hours, the 12-member jury announced Boban was not guilty of the murder of Farida Sookram, but guilty on the lesser count of manslaughter. Boban’s attorney, Nizam Mohammed, asked Rampersad to temper justice with mercy when he passes sentence today. Boban had attempted to plead guilty to the killing, Mohammed said, even before the start of the trial. "At every opportunity," Mohammed told the judge, "he sought mercy from the court from his very first appearance before your Lordship."
