Wonderful doctors saved my life

THE EDITOR: I should be most grateful if you can grant me the privilege of informing the general public of the wonderful work that is being done by Dr Charles and the entire nursing staff, in particular trainee Joefield Haynes, the Muslim nurse, and all other staff members of ward 54 at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital who went beyond the call of duty to ensure that my 12 days was nothing short of perfect.

Firstly, I was a victim of the crime wave currently sweeping our beloved island. On Saturday November 5, 2005 at approximately 12.45 pm in the Quarry Upper Gonzales, I was shot four times at close range. No announcement of "Don’t Move" "Hands Up" "Pass what you have" "This is a robbery" — nothing just pow pow pow pow.

I prefer not to elaborate on same but to heap praise on the driver and two strangers who assisted in immediately transporting me to Port-of-Spain General Hospital. Without their timely intervention, I could have been murder victim #302 or whatever. Moreover, a lot of negative publicity has been highlighted by both the print and electronic media.

Re: The care and infrastructure at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. My 12 days’ experience has been totally devoid of all the negative experiences associated with both institutions. From the time of my arrival I was given immediate attention, reviewed by a Cuban Doctor in casualty, sent for an X-ray and then wheeled to the theatre to be operated on and eventually stabilised. I once again wish to thank Dr Charles (African), Dr Rangoo (Cuban), Dr Mc Kay (American) the light skinned female rasta doctor, the Indian doctor and all the other staff members for their attention, kindness, professionalism and utter devotion to duty. Moreover, I’m appealing to the Minister of Health Mr John Rahael to please take a little time from your busy schedule to visit Ward 54 personally and observe first hand the wonderful job that is being done by the entire staff and to offer encouragement which will boost morale resulting in a continuation of the splendid work. I however encountered two problems during my 12 days, stay at Ward 54 which no doubt will be solved without much delay.

1) When it rains the eastern end of Ward 54 is flooded although the louvres are closed. 2) The elevator also leaks as I was drenched on my way to take my third X-ray.

All in all I’m 98 percent satisfied with the service at Port-of-Spain General Hospital.
