Take Carnival, tassa and chutney to World Cup

THE EDITOR: Now that Trinidad and Tobago Soca Warriors are going to Germany to complete for the world Cup, God has furnished Trinidad and Tobago with a heaven-sent opportunity to display its tourist potential to the 16 countries represented there, not to mention persons from all over the world who would be in that country for the games.

We expect government to keep its promises in giving every support to this venture. A decision must be taken to charter a plane for the visit to include all aspects of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture including Carnival, steelband, calypso, folk arts, soca, tassa, chutney, opera Trinidad style, dancing, painting, sculpture and together with all the forms that can be considered truly Trinbagonian. In doing so we will be making sure to capitalise on this opportunity.

A committee should be appointed with this in view. It must be headed by a patriot versed in the arts and who is conversant with Government procedure and policy in these matters. The name Dr Pat Bishop, TC immediately comes to mind as a holder of the Trinity Cross who is an accomplished musician, composer, historian and painter. In addition to all this she is the head of the Carnival Institute.

We must remember that we will be competing with the best and must put our best foot forward to showcase Trinidad and Tobago. The present Minister of Tourism can be commended on the work he has done to make Tobago a preferred destination for tourists.

The icing on the cake would be to make Trinidad just as popular as a tourist attraction. Jack Warner has shown us the way with his dedication to football in which he has invested much of his time, effort and finances. Would it be too much to expect Government to show the same dedication to see Trinidad and Tobago’s unique features emblazoned on the World map of tourism? Such an opportunity is unlikely to recur.
