Looking forward to retirement
THE EDITOR: Mr George Alleyne’s article entitled "Employees as Shareholders" echoes the same sentiment that I have expressed for the past 30 years. While I was employed at Texaco in the sixties and seventies Mr George Weekes the OWTU President General would hold the country to ransom by demanding 40 to 50 percent wage increases instead of seeking a "Stock Plan, Savings Plan or Success-Sharing Plan" for his workers. ZIDE HOSEIN San Fernando
The result was reduced "buying power" because everything else went up by 50-60 percent. I have been employed for a US oil company and have received 5-7 percent wage increases, however I own Stocks in the company, have a Savings Plan and a Savings Plus plan all of which are contributed to by my employer and me. I look forward to a financially secure retirement, not beating my chest and saying "we got a 40 percent wage increase." This Mr Errol McLeod is 2020 vision!
