Something is rotten at San Fernando General Hospital

THE EDITOR: As someone who has had to visit this health institution I would like to bring to the attention of the general public and to the ministry of health the abominable health and safety situation that presently exist at the Medical Social Work Department at the San Fernando General Hospital.

For the last two years, since this office space was created, staff and patients alike have been severely affected by a noxious stench, which seems to emanate from underground.

The staff, in particular, has suffered with certain individuals developing respiratory problems such as asthma and short breath. Other complaints include chest pains, allergic reactions, and persistent ear infections.

The responsible authority, which in this instance is the South West Regional Authority, has been notified but to date has failed to take decisive action.

This in my opinion reflects terribly on their part since health is supposed to be their business.

In view of an increasing awareness among the population of the need to provide a safe working environment it can only be hoped that the minister of health will intervene in this situation with effective remedies.

If one can become ill in a hospital then, to quote Shakespeare, "truly something is rotten in the stage of Denmark."
