Woman power at WASA
THE EDITOR: Please allow me space in your newspaper to express how proud my fellow employees and myself felt after receiving awards of recognition at the WASA 10th Anniversary held at the Centre of Excellence on Sunday December 4, 2005. WASA Chief Executive Mr Errol Grimes and his management team did a grand job and made everyone feel proud to be WASA. On the other hand, I am saddened to think what the last five years of my working life would be with the pungent smell of changes to WASA management coming from the offices above the CEOs. A gender takeover by females is proposed to be WASA’s New Year gift. At present the acting Chairman of the Board of Commissioners is a woman, the head of Board’s Human Resource Committee is a woman, the General Manager Human Resource and the Deputy General Industrial Relations who are both males are to be replaced in January 2006 by two females. Added to this, the knowledgeable General Manager Operations Wayne Joseph who usually performs in the position of CEO in the absence of Mr Grimes has been relieved of those acting duties and replaced by the General Manager Legal Services who is also a woman. I am a female employee and really proud that my gender is rising in the Corporate world, but these unexplained sweeping changes appear to be an overkill and not based on sound judgement. To the ordinary employees these moves are quite puzzling and should be stopped and reviewed. Mr Wayne Joseph is the General Manager Operations responsible for the distribution, production and maintenance of the water and wastewater systems, which are the critical core functions in the Authority. It is the natural upward mobility given the sphere of responsibility for anyone holding that position to be in charge of WASA in the absence of the CEO. Why the change to someone totally inexperience and having no technical background? There is also talk that the General Manager Business Service Mr Ventor is to be removed, I do hope his replacement is not a woman. Y HENRY Port-of-Spain
